Wheelchair Accessible Transportation to Milwaukee Mitchell Airport
Book a wheelchair accessible ride to or from MKE, scheduled in advance, so a van is waiting when the flight lands.
Getting to MKE in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport sits at 5300 S. Howell Avenue, about 8 miles south of downtown off I-94 at Exit 318. The drive is simple enough. What catches families out is finding a vehicle that fits a power wheelchair and runs on a schedule set by a flight.
Rideshare apps do not reliably produce a ramp-equipped van in the Milwaukee market, and a 4:30 AM accessible request for a 6:15 AM departure is the one most likely to go unfilled. BriteLift takes the booking ahead of time and arranges a wheelchair accessible vehicle for a specific pickup, so the ride is confirmed days before you travel.
What we need when you book
- Flight number and airline, so pickup timing can be set against the actual departure or arrival.
- Type of mobility device: manual chair, power chair, scooter, or a walker with the ability to transfer. Power chairs and scooters need more ramp clearance and floor space, and knowing that in advance is what prevents the wrong vehicle showing up.
- Whether anyone is traveling with you. Companions and luggage both take room alongside a secured chair.
- Curb details at home: steps, a steep driveway, a narrow apartment entrance. This shapes which vehicle works.
Booking Both Legs of the Trip
The return leg is the one people leave to chance, and finding a wheelchair accessible vehicle at short notice from an airport curb at 10:00 PM is the hardest version of this problem. Book the flight out and the flight home at the same time.
The online booking form accepts more than one date in a single session, which is what you want here, since your outbound and your return are usually days apart. Put both in before you close the tab.
The BriteLift app is well suited to a single trip or a same-day round trip, and it shows the vehicle on a map once it is on the way, which is worth having on the morning of an early flight. For two dates, use the form or call 414-716-1212.
Where Your Ride Meets You at Mitchell
Departing from MKE
Drop-off for departing passengers is on the upper Ticketing level. Your driver can bring you to the curb at your airline’s check-in doors and assist you out of the vehicle. Skycaps work the Ticketing and Baggage Claim areas and handle luggage from the curb onward. The airport lists Airport Operations at 414-747-5325 and Travelers Aid at 414-747-5245 if you need help finding one.
Wheelchair assistance inside the terminal, through security and out to the gate, comes from your airline rather than from ground transportation. Request it when you book your flight, ideally at least 48 hours ahead. Travelers assume this is covered by their ride more often than any other detail on this page.
Arriving at MKE
Arrivals and baggage claim are on the lower level. For a pre-booked accessible ride, the ground transportation curb outside baggage claim is usually the simplest meeting point. Call 414-716-1212 once you have your bags and we will direct you to the exact door. Mitchell assigns its ground transportation areas differently for taxis, shuttles and rideshare, so confirming by phone on the day beats reading it off a sign.
If you are connecting from a long flight and your arrival slips, tell us. Adjusting a pickup takes one phone call, and a missed pickup can cost you the rest of the evening.
Early Flights and Late Arrivals
MKE’s earliest departures push pickups into the 3:00 to 4:30 AM range from most Milwaukee County addresses, and earlier still from Waukesha, Racine or Kenosha. Those slots are limited and they fill first. For an early flight, book several days out, and a week ahead if you can. The same goes for holiday weekends and the Sunday evening return crush.

Common Questions
Can you take a power wheelchair to the airport?
Yes. Tell us the make and model, or the approximate width, height and weight, when you book. Vehicles in our network vary in ramp capacity, and matching the right one to your chair is the point of asking.
Do I transfer to a seat, or stay in my chair?
Either. Most riders stay in their own chair, secured with tie-downs for the drive. If you prefer a passenger seat, say so when booking so the vehicle assigned has the room and the layout to make it easy.
How far in advance should I book?
Three to seven days for a normal flight, and further out for a departure before 6:00 AM or during a holiday period. Same-day airport requests are sometimes possible. Call and we will tell you honestly whether we can cover it.
Will the driver help with luggage?
Your driver will help you get from your door to the vehicle and load your bags. From the terminal curb, airport Skycaps handle luggage and your airline handles wheelchair assistance to the gate.
What does an airport ride cost?
Fares depend on the distance from your pickup address and the type of vehicle needed. Enter your trip in the form above for a quote before you commit, or call 414-716-1212.
