Wheelchair Accessible Transportation to Froedtert Hospital & the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center

Froedtert is a campus, not a door. If you are arranging a wheelchair-accessible ride to Froedtert Hospital, the Center for Advanced Care, the Clinical Cancer Center, the Eye Institute or Children’s Wisconsin, the difference between a smooth trip and twenty minutes of circling is knowing which building you want and where a ramp can actually set down.

Tell us the building and the entrance when you book, and the trip gets planned to that door. If you would rather talk it through with a person, call 414-716-1212.

Which building do you actually need?

The Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus sits in Wauwatosa, bounded roughly by Watertown Plank Road, N. 87th Street and W. Wisconsin Avenue. Several separate organizations share it. “Froedtert” on an appointment letter could mean any of a dozen buildings, and they are not close together — walking between two of them with a power chair in February is not a reasonable plan.

The addresses worth having in front of you when you book:

    • Froedtert Hospital — the general campus mailing address is 9200 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53226. This is the address most people type into a phone, and on its own it is not specific enough to get a ramp to the right entrance.
    • Center for Advanced Care — a large outpatient building on the campus, used for a great many specialty clinic appointments. If your letter says CFAC, that is this one.
    • Froedtert & MCW Clinical Cancer Center — infusion and oncology appointments. See the note below on timing return trips, and our page on rides through a course of cancer treatment.
    • Froedtert & MCW Eye Institute — 925 N. 87th St. A separate building with its own entrance; a common source of confusion because people are dropped at the hospital instead.
    • Children’s Wisconsin — 9000 W. Wisconsin Ave. On the same campus but a distinct hospital with its own drop-off.
    • Adult Emergency Department — 8810 William Coffey Dr.
    • Specialty Clinics, Sargeant Health Center, Pain Management Center — all on campus, all with their own doors.

If your letter names a building, give us the building. If it only says “Froedtert,” the clinic’s own number or 414-777-7700 will tell you which one, and it is worth the two-minute call before the day.

Where the ride drops you off

Patient pick-up and drop-off for Froedtert Hospital is on Level 2 inside Parking 1. That is a covered, indoor drop-off, which matters more than it sounds like in January — a ramp needs level, cleared ground to deploy onto, and an indoor deck gives you that regardless of weather.

Froedtert currently recommends reaching the campus via 87th Street. The newer Froedtert Hospital Parking — Blue structure at N. 92nd Street and W. Doyne Avenue has more than 2,000 spaces with ADA parking on every level near the elevators, but that is a parking structure for people who are staying, not the patient drop-off. If someone is driving separately to meet you there, that is where they should park.

Build in extra time: the campus is under construction

This is the single most common reason a Froedtert trip runs long right now, and it is not on most transportation websites. There is active construction on the Froedtert Hospital campus, with lane closures around N. 92nd Street that can back traffic up badly at peak times. Froedtert is asking patients to allow extra time to reach appointments.

Practically: add fifteen to twenty minutes to a weekday morning arrival, and tell us the appointment time rather than the pickup time you have in mind. We would rather build the buffer in at booking than have you sitting in a queue on Doyne Avenue watching the clock.

The work is not temporary scaffolding — an expanded main entrance and lobby are due to open in 2026 and a new bed tower in 2027, so the approach to this campus will keep changing. When something moves, the entrance we route to moves with it.

Going home: the Discharge Lounge and Door 6

If the rider is being discharged from Froedtert Hospital, you do not have to arrange the ride from the bedside with a nurse waiting. Froedtert runs a Discharge Lounge at 950 N. 92nd St. — a staffed place to wait comfortably for a ride or for prescriptions to come up from the pharmacy. Patient pick-up for the lounge is via Door 6, off 92nd Street, with dedicated parking there.

This solves the hardest part of a discharge, which is that nobody can tell you the actual release time until quite close to it. Ask the care team to move the rider to the Discharge Lounge, then call us with Door 6 as the pickup. It converts an unpredictable wait upstairs into a normal, bookable pickup at a known door.

If you are working through a discharge more generally, our hospital discharge transportation page covers what to settle with the discharge planner before you commit to a pickup time.

    Timing the return trip

How you book the ride home should depend on the appointment, not on habit.

    • Book a fixed return time for anything with a predictable finish — dialysis, infusion, imaging, an eye exam, a straightforward follow-up. You know roughly when it ends, so pin it.
    • Leave the return open and call when the rider is ready for a first consultation, an oncology appointment where scans and results may stack up, or anything on a day the campus is running behind. A new patient visit at the Cancer Center can run well past its slot.

Say which of the two you want at the time you book. A return that is planned as open is a different trip from one that is planned for 2:30 PM and then moved twice.

What to tell us when you book a campus trip

    • The building and, if you have it, the door or entrance number. This is the one detail that changes a Froedtert trip most.
    • The chair. Manual, power or scooter, and roughly the width and weight. A power chair commonly runs 250 to 400 pounds empty, which narrows which vehicles will work. Make and model is enough if you do not know the numbers.
    • Whether the rider stays in the chair or prefers to transfer to a seat with the chair stowed. Either is fine; it changes what gets sent.
    • Steps at the home end. Three steps and no railing is worth flagging in advance — a ramp needs somewhere level to land.
    • Oxygen, a walker, a transfer board traveling with the rider.
    • Who else is coming. Most accessible vans seat one or two passengers alongside the wheelchair position.

Coming in from outside Milwaukee County

A large share of Froedtert’s patients travel in from Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee and Racine counties, and this is where the county-run programs get complicated. Milwaukee County Transit Plus does not leave Milwaukee County. Waukesha County’s RideLine does leave the county for medical trips, but only when the service is not duplicated in-county and generally with prior approval — though Froedtert and MCW’s main campus is one of the destinations exempt from that approval requirement.

If you are weighing those programs against paying privately, our comparison of Milwaukee wheelchair transportation options lays out what each one covers and where each one stops. For suburban pickups specifically, see Waukesha County, for trips up from the south, Racine and Kenosha, and for trips within Wauwatosa itself, Wauwatosa.

    Common questions

How far ahead should I book a ride to Froedtert?

A day or two of notice is comfortable and gives the widest choice of vehicle. Same-day is often possible — call rather than using the form so availability can be checked while you are on the phone. Early mornings before 7 AM are the thinnest slot across the whole Milwaukee market, and Froedtert schedules a lot of early appointments, so book those as far ahead as you can.

Can the driver wait during a short appointment?

For a short, predictable appointment that can be arranged. For anything longer it is usually cheaper to book the return separately. Ask when you call and we will tell you which works out better for that specific trip.

Can you take a rider to several appointments on the campus in one day?

Yes. Multi-stop days are common on this campus — labs, then a clinic, then imaging in a different building. Give us the sequence when you book so the trip is planned as one day rather than three separate requests.

Do you go to the Zablocki VA Medical Center?

Yes, though note it is a different campus — the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center is at 5000 W. National Ave., on the near south side, not on the Regional Medical Center campus. People occasionally book one meaning the other, so it is worth confirming which you need.

How much does a ride cost?

It depends on the distance and the kind of vehicle the chair needs. You will see a quote before anything is confirmed, and you do not need an account to get one. Our guide to what accessible transportation costs in Milwaukee explains what drives the number.
